About Additive Anglia
Additive Anglia was the brainchild of Dr Martin McMahon (LinkedIn). Whilst working as a consultant to industry, offering advice to those seeking to adopt additive manufacturing into their business, this brought him into contact with the University of Suffolk. Like many local universities UoS have a 3D Print Lab, but utilisation was very low, and there was very little being done to encourage AM within academic circles. Then by looking further afield at other universities in the region it was apparent that similar situations existed at these sites also. Seeing this as an opportunity to help, Martin started to engage with UoS, UEA, and ARU with the intention of uniting all three sites under a cluster organisation to promote all aspects of 3D printing; both internally, and more importantly, externally.
Entrepreneur in Residence
The project has gained momentum and in 2025 The Royal Society awarded Martin with an Entrepreneur in Residence grant enabling him to take the Additive Anglia project forward. This project will initially run for two years, with a dedication to education and up-skilling the current and future workforce, fuelled by a commitment to excellence. Additive Anglia is a first of its kind project to promote Additive Manufacturing (AM) in all parts of our society. Over the coming years the EiR project aims to deliver the latest training and R&D opportunities to students and businesses across the East of England.
Printing the future of East Anglia in 3D
Under The Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence programme, the Additive Anglia project now formally brings together Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and the University of East Anglia (UEA). Martin has joined forces with Mark Tree from ARU and Colin Dowding to start building this new academic network and era of collaboration. By combining their strengths and resources this new cluster now offers some 3D printing capabilities that cannot be found anywhere else in the region.

Point of Contact
In Additive Anglia, we hope to provide a single point of contact for local businesses to find out more on what 3D printing has to offer.
Supply & Demand
The Additive Anglia project aims to fill the gaps in the market for supplying dedicated research and skills training for Additive Manufacturing.
Design for AM
Up-skilling the workforce starts with an understanding of the design skills, and understanding of materials, needed to successfully deploy 3D printing in a business.

Our Commitment to Excellence
At the heart of the Additive Anglia project is a commitment to delivering positive outcomes to the students enrolled in related courses, and to local businesses seeking to advance their knowledge of 3D Printing. We will seek excellence in every aspect of our work, from enhancing coursework to developing in-depth research, and partnerships.
